Simon Boag

Simon had a 15-year career within the fishing industry as a fleet and vessel manager, operating vessels in New Zealand, Argentina, and Antarctica as well as process improvement roles in wetfish and shellfish factories.

He is currently a consultant to several industry bodies:
  • South East Trawl Fishing Industry Association (SETFIA): represents stakeholders from Australia’s most significant finfish fishery.
  • Small Pelagic Fishing Industry Association (SPFIA): a 20,000 tonne MSC accredited fishery
  • Southern Shark Industry Alliance (SSIA) – Australia’s largest catcher of ‘flake’

Simon is also a member of the Southern and Eastern Scale and Shark Fishery Management Advisory Committee, SESSF Resource Advisory Group and SPF RAG. He has various commercial fishing board positions and is a former member of the Fish Naming Standard Committee.

Simon has penned and co-authored a number of publications including a chapter in the CSIRO book “Big, Bold and Blue”, behavioural work to reduce waste from fishing vessels, an investigation into uncaught quota, an FRDC project that trained fishers and  numerous projects to reduce interactions between fisheries and endangered, threatened and protected species.

He has undertaken work for the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and for Parks Australia.

Simon leads the Atlantis shared marine space projects and has helped tens of oil, gas, seismic and offshore wind developers understand and mitigate their impacts on the fishing industry.

  • Bachelor of Education in Environmental Science – Melbourne University
  • Graduate Certificate Applied Science (Fisheries) – Australian Maritime College
  • Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors – AICD
